A cellular process phenotype observed in the vegetative growth phase of the life cycle in which heterochromatin assembly occurs to a lower extent than normal in regions containing protein-coding genes. Heterochromatin assembly is the assembly of chromatin into a compact and highly condensed form that is often, but not always, transcriptionally silent.
