- Definition
- The nonvesicular transport of sterols between two membranes, in which sterol molecules are moved from a donor membrane to an acceptor membrane. This process can occur spontaneously, by diffusion of lipid monomers through the aqueous phase, or be mediated by lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) that shield the lipid from the aqueous phase, either by shuttling it between the membranes or by forming a bridge that spans them.
