The process of transcribing and translating the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) to produce at least a subset of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) proteins, 2 rRNAs, and mitochondrial tRNAs, which are critical for ATP production. Protein maturation is included when required to form an active form of a product from an inactive precursor form.
